The North / East it is the most luxuriant region in Madagascar, thanks to the abundant rain that falls for most of the year and to its vicinity to the equator.
The island is rich in forests, rivers, lakes, cultivated lowlands, plantations of spices and tropical fruits, traditional villages.
The SAVA region – from the names of the 4 principal cities: Sambava, Antalaha, Vohemar, Andapa – is a vast territory laying between the west chains of mountains and the Indian ocean to the east. The Marojejy (National Park) reaches above the altitude of 2.000 ms.
However, the access to these regions is difficult due to the lack of good roads. The locals have live in harmony with the environment and they have developed an almost independent economy in their land. Particularly flourishing is the cultivation of vanilla, an orchid native to Mexico. Despite the fact that pollination is done manually, Madagascar has become the greatest producer in the world. Vanilla is cultivated by many small producers and locally processed locally, then exported all over the world.
