Wake up, Budapest!

A 3-hour walking tour from the river up to the hill

The tour will start at 9 am at the hotel. We will walk along the beautiful Danube river and enjoy the World Heritage view of Castle Hill and Chain bridge from the Pest embankment, learning about the origins of the Hungarian capital. Following a short ride to the hilly side of Budapest we will admire one of the most beautiful churches in Central Europe, Matthias church. After taking in a breathtaking view from Fishermen’s Bastion we will deep-dive into the array of charming narrow streets of Castle district and discover some of its historical secrets and hidden-away beauties – and even part of Budapest’s natural cave system.

Lunch break – after visiting the Buda castle district, the group will head back to the downtown together, and have a lunch break from about 12:30 pm. Here you have the choice to say good-bye, and continue the day on your own, or join the afternoon tour, which starts at 2 pm.

Behind the Iron Curtain – Budapest and its secret history

3,5-hour walking tour through the most important sites of the “communist” era

After meeting in the lobby of our hotel, we will start our afternoon tour covering the more recent history of Hungary – the half-a-century long era of Communism. We will visit the square in front of one of the largest Parliaments in the world, the site of a mass-massacre in 1956, during the Hungarian Uprising against the much-hated Communist regime. During our tour you will learn about the historical background of this period, learn about everyday life of the common people living behind the Iron Curtain and see the most important Soviet-related sights and memorials that are still here in Budapest. You will have the opportunity to treat yourself to some of the best cakes in town in a 125-year-old traditional coffeehouse on the World Heritage avenue of Budapest, Andrássy út. After this short break we will visit the former headquarters of the Hungarian Nazi party and later the headquarters of the Communist secret police, that now houses the House of Terror Museum.

Either tour will run with a minimum of 8 and maximum of 16 participants.
